The Tesla Referral Program
What is the current Tesla referral benefit?
As of this update, the headline buyer benefit through the referral program in the U.S. is 3 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) at no charge plus Supercharging credits. Tesla periodically rotates these — sometimes the credit value goes up or down, sometimes a cash discount replaces the FSD trial. Always confirm the active offer on your order summary.
Do I need a code to use the referral?
No. The referral is embedded in the link. Click through, configure your vehicle, and the benefit applies automatically at checkout. There is no promo code field for it.
Does using a referral cost me anything?
No. The buyer-side benefit is paid by Tesla on top of the price. The referrer earns rewards on their own account separately.
Which vehicles qualify?
All new Tesla vehicles: Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck. The benefit applies regardless of trim. Used and CPO inventory typically does not qualify.
Can I use the referral on a lease?
Generally yes. Tesla has applied referral benefits to leased vehicles in most program iterations, though the exact buyer-side reward sometimes differs from a cash purchase. Always check the order summary.
What if I'm trading in a non-Tesla?
Trade-in is independent of the referral. You can still use the referral when ordering a new Tesla and trade in your existing vehicle in the same transaction.
Can the referral apply to inventory or showroom cars?
Most of the time, yes — but Tesla occasionally excludes already-discounted inventory units. The order summary is the source of truth. If a unit is excluded, no referral line will appear.
I clicked the referral link but don't see the benefit on my order. Why?
The referral cookie may have been stripped. Common causes: browser tracking protection blocking the cookie, switching devices mid-order, or aggressive browser extensions. Click the link again from a fresh tab on the same device, then go through the configurator without leaving the browser session. If you still don't see the line item, contact Tesla support before paying the order fee.
Can I be referred by more than one person?
Tesla attributes the referral to the most recent valid link clicked before order submission. Only one referrer is credited per vehicle.
How long is this offer available?
Tesla's referral benefits change without notice. Tesla has historically adjusted, paused, and restarted the program many times. We recommend ordering sooner rather than later if you're already planning to buy.
Full Self-Driving (FSD)
What does the 3-month FSD trial include?
Full FSD (Supervised): navigate-on-autopilot for highways and city streets, traffic-light and stop-sign response, automatic lane changes, and Actually Smart Summon (where supported). It is the same software that paid FSD owners receive.
Is FSD really self-driving?
No. The "Supervised" qualifier matters: the human driver remains legally responsible at all times and must monitor the road. The car is highly assistive but not autonomous.
Does FSD work in my city?
FSD (Supervised) works in all U.S. states and is rolling out to other markets. It does not require pre-mapped roads — it operates anywhere the car is.
What does FSD cost after the trial?
$99/month subscription or $8,000 lump-sum purchase as of this update. Tesla can change these prices at any time. The lump-sum transfers with the car if you sell it.
Will FSD make me a worse driver?
That's a fair worry. The honest answer: most owners report FSD reduces fatigue on long drives but increases the temptation to multitask, which is dangerous. Treat it the way you'd treat any advanced driver-assist — an aid, not a substitute for attention.
Charging and Supercharging
How do I find Superchargers?
The fastest way is the in-car nav: enter a destination and Supercharger stops are added automatically. The Tesla mobile app and tesla.com/findus also show every location with live availability and pricing.
Do I need to swipe a card or scan an app?
No. Plug in. The car authenticates automatically and bills the credit card on file.
What does Supercharging cost?
It varies by location and time of day. The U.S. average in 2026 is around $0.36 per kWh, with off-peak rates 20–40% lower. Use our calculator to model your own case.
Can I charge at home?
Yes — and you should. Level 2 (240V) home charging is dramatically cheaper than Supercharging and gentler on the battery. See our charging guide for setup options.
What plug type do new Teslas use?
NACS (North American Charging Standard) — what used to be called "the Tesla connector." Most non-Tesla EVs sold in 2026 also ship with NACS now. Adapters exist for older J1772 (AC) and CCS (DC fast) standards.
Can non-Tesla EVs use Superchargers now?
Yes — Tesla has opened the U.S. Supercharger network to other brands as those vehicles arrive with NACS connectors or via adapter. Pricing for non-Tesla vehicles is generally higher unless they sign up for a monthly membership.
What are idle and congestion fees?
Idle fees apply if your car finishes charging at a busy station and you don't move. Congestion fees apply when charging above 90% at a busy station, to encourage drivers to leave at 80% and free up the stall. Both are designed to keep stations available; the Tesla app warns you before you incur them.
Buying and Pricing
Does the federal $7,500 EV credit still apply to Teslas?
Yes for most Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck (RWD/AWD) trims, subject to buyer income limits and the IRS-eligible vehicle list. Model S and Model X usually exceed the MSRP cap and don't qualify. Tesla applies the credit at point of sale through the IRS portal.
Can I order online or do I need to visit a store?
You can order entirely online. Tesla also accepts orders at stores. Either way, the referral link should be applied before order submission.
How long until I get my Tesla?
For inventory vehicles, often within a couple of weeks. For custom orders, lead times vary by trim and region — typically 4–12 weeks. Tesla shows an estimated delivery window when you configure.
Can I cancel my order?
Yes — the order fee is generally refundable up until you sign final paperwork at delivery. Tesla's exact policy can change; check the order page terms before paying.
Does Tesla negotiate?
Generally no on the price itself — Tesla operates a no-haggle direct-sales model. End-of-quarter inventory promotions, occasional pricing adjustments, and the referral program are the typical ways to lower the effective price.
Ready to use the referral?
One click sets the cookie. Configure your model and check your order summary for the FSD trial and Supercharging credit.

What does maintenance look like on a Tesla?
Minimal. Tire rotations every ~6,250 miles, cabin air filter every 2 years, brake fluid test every 2 years, and HEPA / wiper-blade replacements as needed. No oil changes, no transmission service, no spark plugs. Tires and 12V (or 48V on Cybertruck) accessory battery are the main wear items.
How does Tesla handle service?
Most service is handled via the Tesla mobile app: schedule, diagnose, and confirm via the app. Mobile service technicians come to you for minor issues. Service centers handle bigger work. Loaner availability varies by location.
Are Teslas reliable?
Drivetrain reliability is excellent — very few moving parts, very few failures. The historical complaint areas have been panel fit, paint quality, and occasional infotainment glitches. The current generation has improved meaningfully on all fronts.
What's the warranty?
4 years or 50,000 miles on the basic vehicle. 8 years or 100–150k miles on the battery and drive unit (varies by model and battery size). Used vehicles purchased through Tesla also receive a remaining-warranty coverage.
How long do Tesla batteries last?
Real-world data from large fleets suggests Tesla batteries retain 85–90% of their capacity after 200,000 miles for typical drivers. Heavy DC fast charging shortens that somewhat; primarily home-charged batteries hold up better.
Should I buy or lease?
Buy if you intend to keep the car 5+ years; lease if you trade often, want a low monthly payment, or aren't sure about the EV transition long-term. Tesla's lease terms are fairly standard for the industry.
