What makes the Model X different
The Model X is the only Tesla with double-hinged "falcon-wing" rear doors. They open up and outward, requiring less side clearance than a traditional door — which is a real benefit in tight parking spaces and lets parents load kids and car seats with extraordinary access. The doors are sensor-equipped and computed to avoid hitting low ceilings, side walls, or your Tesla's own bumper.
It is also the only Tesla with a true third row that adults can sit in for short trips. The 6-seat configuration with second-row captain's chairs is the most popular and gives adults realistic access to the third row by sliding the captain's chairs forward; the 7-seat with a second-row bench is harder to live with for full-row use.
Plaid vs Long Range
Plaid in the Model X is a curiosity: a 2.5-second SUV with three rows and falcon-wing doors. It has the same tri-motor architecture as Model S Plaid but with different tuning and a higher curb weight. Compared to Long Range:
- About 25 miles less EPA range.
- Similar tire compound and similar accelerated wear if you use the performance often.
- $10k more sticker.
For most family buyers, Long Range is the right choice. Plaid is genuinely entertaining but the average Model X owner is hauling kids and bikes, not chasing 0–60 times.
Real-world range
Model X is heavy and tall, which is a drag-and-mass penalty on the highway. Practical numbers for Long Range:
- Summer mixed: 320–350 miles.
- Highway 70–75 mph: 270–310 miles.
- Winter highway: 220–270 miles.
- Towing at 5,000 lb: roughly half EPA range. Plan ~150–180 miles between Supercharger stops with a trailer.
The Model X has a 5,000-lb tow rating — the highest in the Tesla SUV lineup — which makes it a credible option for trailers, popup campers, and small boats.
What the referral gives you on a Model X
3 months of FSD (Supervised) and a Supercharging credit balance. On long road trips with kids, FSD's automatic lane changes and city-streets navigation are genuinely fatigue-reducing. The Supercharging credit covers a noticeable share of a single major road trip, particularly because Model X uses more energy per mile than the smaller Teslas.

The benefits apply to Long Range and Plaid alike, in 5-, 6-, and 7-seat layouts.

- Seating layout: for families, the 6-seat captain's-chairs config is hard to beat — easy walk-through to the third row, dignified for adults in the second row, and visually striking. The 5-seat layout maximizes cargo room. The 7-seat trades the walk-through for one extra seat.
- Wheels: 20" Cyberstream wheels offer the best ride and most range. 22" Turbine wheels look more aggressive but reduce range and roughen the ride.
- Yoke vs round wheel: the round wheel is now standard. Most family buyers go round.
- Tow package: a worthwhile extra-cost option if there's any chance you'll tow. The 5,000-lb rating is genuinely usable.
What it costs to live with
- Insurance: Model X insures higher than Model S due to repair complexity around the falcon-wing doors. Make sure your insurer is comfortable with Tesla repairs.
- Maintenance: the falcon-wing doors require occasional sensor recalibration after impacts or over-articulation. Other than that, very low — same as the rest of the Tesla lineup.
- Tires: 20" lasts 25–30k typical. 22" lasts ~20k. The Model X is heavy, which is the dominant factor.
- Federal credit: Model X currently exceeds the $80,000 SUV MSRP cap on most configurations and does not qualify for the federal $7,500 credit at point of sale.
- Charging: efficiency around ~3.0 mi/kWh on Long Range and ~2.7 on Plaid. Use our calculator with those numbers.
