What makes the Model X different

The Model X is the only Tesla with double-hinged "falcon-wing" rear doors. They open up and outward, requiring less side clearance than a traditional door — which is a real benefit in tight parking spaces and lets parents load kids and car seats with extraordinary access. The doors are sensor-equipped and computed to avoid hitting low ceilings, side walls, or your Tesla's own bumper.

It is also the only Tesla with a true third row that adults can sit in for short trips. The 6-seat configuration with second-row captain's chairs is the most popular and gives adults realistic access to the third row by sliding the captain's chairs forward; the 7-seat with a second-row bench is harder to live with for full-row use.

Plaid vs Long Range

Plaid in the Model X is a curiosity: a 2.5-second SUV with three rows and falcon-wing doors. It has the same tri-motor architecture as Model S Plaid but with different tuning and a higher curb weight. Compared to Long Range:

For most family buyers, Long Range is the right choice. Plaid is genuinely entertaining but the average Model X owner is hauling kids and bikes, not chasing 0–60 times.

Real-world range

Model X is heavy and tall, which is a drag-and-mass penalty on the highway. Practical numbers for Long Range:

The Model X has a 5,000-lb tow rating — the highest in the Tesla SUV lineup — which makes it a credible option for trailers, popup campers, and small boats.

What the referral gives you on a Model X

3 months of FSD (Supervised) and a Supercharging credit balance. On long road trips with kids, FSD's automatic lane changes and city-streets navigation are genuinely fatigue-reducing. The Supercharging credit covers a noticeable share of a single major road trip, particularly because Model X uses more energy per mile than the smaller Teslas.

Common questions about the Model X

Are the falcon-wing doors reliable?
The current generation has been reliable. Earlier (pre-2017) Model X had teething issues with door alignment and seals; subsequent revisions have largely resolved those. The sensors do require occasional recalibration after impacts.
Can adults realistically sit in the third row?
Yes — for short to medium trips. Headroom is fine; legroom is OK if the second row slides forward a bit. Long road trips for adults in row 3 are tight, but it's better than most three-row SUVs in this price range.
What's the actual cargo capacity?
With third row down: ~37 cu ft. Both rows down: ~88 cu ft. Plus a 6.6 cu ft frunk. Loading is easy with the falcon doors out of the way.
How does it tow at 5,000 lb?
Power is not the issue — range is. Plan around 50% of EPA range when towing at the rating, with a Supercharger every 2–2.5 hours. Most pull-through Supercharger stops in 2026 accommodate trailers.
