Every station on this page comes from the Alternative Fuels Data Center, the U.S. Department of Energy's public database of alternative fuel stations. Our copy is refreshed nightly, so a station that is added or corrected upstream shows up here within a day.
What free means here
A station is only listed if its own pricing record says the charging is free. A blank pricing record is treated as unknown, and a station with one is never shown as free. That rule is deliberately narrow. It leaves out chargers that may well be free but have never said so, and it keeps out the much larger number that simply have no pricing on file.
A claim is only as good as the record behind it, so every station shows its raw pricing text, its raw access text, and the date its record was last confirmed. You can read the source wording and judge it for yourself rather than taking this page's word for it.
What to expect
- Free charging is overwhelmingly Level 2, not fast charging. A typical public Level 2 unit adds somewhere around 20 to 30 miles of range per hour, so it suits a place you were going to park at anyway. Free DC fast charging exists, but it is rare.
- Confirm availability before you rely on it. Records go stale. A charger can be removed, blocked, gated behind a permit or a customers-only policy, or switched to paid long before the database catches up. Check with the site operator before planning a trip around one.
